Pet food recall affects local owners, retailers
Pet owners in Tallahassee and the Big Bend are reacting to a massive dog food recall with concern. Menu Foods issued the recall for its "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches. The products are sold under a variety of labels including Publix brand. A complete list of the 53 labels affected is available at http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.html. The list includes a link to a document that provides the product description and UPC numbers of the affected cans and pouches. Throughout the United States pet owners have reported deaths and illnesses from the food. The U.S. FDA, included the following information in its statement about the recall: "Following feedings of the product, some cats and dogs refused further feedings, while others exhibited signs of renal failure (signs of renal failure include loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting) and others died from renal failure." Mayor opposes proposal to sell future performing-arts center site to county
Mayor John Marks told County Commission Chairman Ed DePuy today that the city was not interested in selling the county a city-owned site for a future performing-arts center on Gaines Street. Instead, Marks urged the non-profit behind the proposed center to get a financial plan together promptly. He did not exclude that the city could turn over the site to the non-profit for free, if commissioners saw a coherent plan.

Talking too loud never hurt no one
So there I was in the steam room at a resort last month (even reporters are entitled to a taste of the good life). Just one other guy and I. After the second blast of steam began to seep into my muscles, I sighed and said to the guy, "Nothing like a steam to loosen you up, huh?" He grunted and said, "Yeah, I come for the peace and quiet, but it's hard to enjoy it with those two guys out there joking around."

Animal drop-off boxes on the chopping block?
A special citizens committee that's examining whether to do away with the animal shelter's drop-off boxes will be presented with a survey from the Leon County Humane Society today. Committee members are expected to make a recommendation soon on the drop-off boxes, which let people abandon their pets, no questions asked. Many animal activists think getting rid of the boxes would mean certain death for pets abandoned by the road, but the city believes they're hurting the shelter's budget.
